ALOO (POTATO) CHOKA

Aloo choka is a popular dish in Trinidad. It’s a very simple yet delicious dish and is one of my favorite things to have with curry, dhal and rice. Yesterday I was just in the mood for some hot and peppery curry!…Sooo I just went for it…and had some kitchen fun! I made curried chicken, patchoi, dhal. rice and of course….the aloo choka!…Added some cucumbers and not forgetting my scorpion pepper to the plate (see below to see what the plate looked like)….jumped on the couch and enjoyed a lifetime movie while I devoured the meal! lol!….that right there is my zone…..so when I am in it, don’t disturb….ok I’m just kidding….well….kinda 😀

So anyways back to the main focus….aloo choka. This is something I remember mummy making on a regular and of course, nothing can come close to my mummy and grandmother’s cooking!….but hey….one day i’ll get there 🙂

Here’s the simple recipe for this dish:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4-5 medium potatoes
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp JGM PRODUCTS black pepper
  • 2 garlic, grated
  • 1/2 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp green seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp hot pepper, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp oil

METHOD:

  1. Peel and slice potatoes. Boil until they are very tender.
  2. Remove from the heat and mash the potatoes until there are no chunks. You can use a fork or a potato masher.
  3. Add garlic, onion, salt, pepper, black pepper and mix well.
  4. Add the oil to a small frying pan and heat.
  5. Once the oil is hot (you should be able to smell it… but it usually heats up in 1-2 mins), add to the mashed potatoes and chunkay.
  6. Mix thoroughly. Be careful when mixing as some of the oil can splash onto your hands.
  7. TIME TO EAT!
